We operate two gorgeous
campgrounds in Southeast Texas as well as a marina and boat
rental on Lake Livingston. The Matagorda Bay RV Park is a
brand new beachfront campground with 70 full hookup RV
spaces right where the Colorado River meets the Gulf of
Mexico on Matagorda Island. Double Lake is a recently
refurbished CCC-built National Forest lakefront campground
just north of Houston.
Matagorda Bay RV Park
The beautiful, brand-new Matagorda Bay RV Park is
located at the mouth of the Colorado River on Matagorda Island.
Matagorda Bay Nature Park is a 1,600-acre park
and preserve at the mouth of the Colorado River on the Matagorda
Peninsula. LCRA is developing the park to provide recreation,
education, wetlands preservation and economic benefit to the region.
The park has about two miles of Gulf of Mexico
and river frontage and hundreds of acres of coastal marshes and
dunes. It has one of the best birding areas in the nation. LCRA
acquired the property in 2001 as part of its commitment to preserve
natural resources for future generations and to provide science
education, recreation and nature tourism opportunities.
Reservations can be made
through the Texas State Parks at 512/389-8900. If you are just
looking for park information, or if you would like to reserve winter
stay for more than two weeks, you can call the campground directly
at 979-863-7120.
Double Lake Campground
Built in 1937 by the Civilian
Conservation Corps, Double Lake offers a little of everything
including camping, fishing, picnicking, hiking or just getting back
in touch with nature. The Double Lake Recreation Area is open to
day use and camping year round, and is a popular destination all
four seasons.
Campers
have ample places to park their gear with 65 family sites (some with
electric and sewer hookups) and an additional nine groups sites.
Thirty-seven campsites are accessible for persons with disabilities.
With national forest trees surrounding the area, each site is
equipped with a picnic table, level pad, lantern holder and a
campfire ring or cooking grill. Showers, drinking water and
toilet facilities are located throughout the campground areas.
Double Lake is stocked with bass, bream and catfish. Boaters and
fishermen can fish from one of three piers or can take advantage of
a limited access boat ramp with parking nearby for trailers.
Swimmers can relax on a sandy beach after taking a cool plunge. Only
boats with small electric motors are allowed on the 23-acre lake.
Visitors can savor the outdoor
flavor by hiking the marked 5-mile trail leading to the Big Creek
Scenic Area, an eyeful of nature at its finest. For a longer trek,
there's access nearby to the Lone Star Hiking Trail which offers an
opportunity to see the "back country" of east Texas.
In an effort to preserve Double
Lake Recreation Area for others in the future, no off-road vehicles
are permitted to roam the area. An 8-mile-long mountain bike trail
meanders around the lake.
The new Livingston Market and
Marina is located in Lake Livingston State Park. The marina offers
pontoon boat rentals as well as human-powered boats like peddle
boats and canoes.
